We all have our moments where we find a tune playing in our heads. With knowledge of at least one scale in all keys you can explore the melody using your scale patterns. When you are learning a new scale or mode, repetition is your friend. Play the scale up, then play it down with alternate picking. Over and over again. During the day, if you have the time you will probably be picking up your guitar and playing whatever you have been working on lately. Add a scale to this routine. Also remember that you don’t have to start at the root note of the scale all the time. Experiment with playing the notes in a different order.

However, the difficult aspect of playing chords isn’t forming them, but transitioning between them.Once you master the technique of transitioning smoothly between two chords, you can really present yourself as a professional when you play any guitar tunes. Here are a few tips to improve your chord transitions when you play the guitar.1. Know the chords before you play them.When you learn guitar chords to play, your fingers know exactly where they need to be when the time comes to play. If your fingers hesitate before they make it to the next chord, work on solidifying those chords into the memory of your fingers so that you can form them with your eyes closed.2. Work through the progressions slowly.We all know that you’re going to need to play fast eventually, but now is not the time when you’re developing smooth chord transitions. Practice at a tempo that allows you to play a progression perfectly before you decide to increase the speed.3. Plan the path of your fingers.Sometimes a couple chords might have your fingers tripping over each other on their way to the next chord formation. Plan where you’re going to place your fingers next and how they’re going to get there in order to avoid your fingers getting tangled up in the process.4. Go between two chords over and over again.A little monotony isn’t a bad thing when you have a difficult set of chords to get through and you might need to bite the bullet and hash it out. When two chords can’t seem to transition, play between those chords over and over again to ingrain them into your muscle memory.5. Place your fingers on the frets simultaneously.Learning chords to play can get you into a habit of placing your fingers on the frets one at a time, but you’ll be slowing down your technique. When you form a chord, practice placing all of your fingers on the strings at the same time. This will shorten the amount of time you need to play each chord and increase your playing speed overall.6. Strum through the transitions.There are going to be subtle hesitations between each chord when you first begin, but you need to continue to strum through the pauses. In this part 2 of my Acoustic guitar lessons you are going to learn the G chord and the D chord. These 2 chords is one of the easiest chords to play. Not only that, it is also one of the most used guitar chord in any song. Last time we learn the two basic easy chords which is the E minor and the C chord.  These chords are the most basic open position guitar chords. An open position chord is one that contains at least one open string. And if you’re a beginner, these are the first chords that you should learn.

The G chords

Let’s start with the G chord. The G chord pattern is shown below in figure 1 in tablature form. To play this put your finger 3 on the 3rd fret of E string, finger 2 is in 2nd fret A string and finger 4 on 3rd fret high e string. This may seem more awkward at first only because you are using your 4th finger, which is your weakest finger. But I recommend that you should try to practice that weak finger because it is the easiest way to shift into another chord and you will discover it later as soon as you learn to play the guitar. The 0 means you play the open string and an open string is where you don’t touch the string with your left hand finger. Then strum down all the 6 strings. Make sure that all the notes of the chords sounded. How to check this? Simple, pick each string individually from the 6th string to the 1st string. This will help you make sure that all of the notes of the chord are sounding.

And once again, all the notes on all string should be sounding perfectly; strum all the strings down and up strokes. Then count each time you strum. Count 1, 2, 3, 4 and also 1 & 2 & 3 & 4.

Try to play a basic 2 chord progression with the G and the C chord that we learn in the previous acoustic guitar lessons chords. You have to practice switching between these 2 chords. Keeping a steady beat and counting. Strum the G chord 4 times at the count of 1, 2, 3, 4 and then shift to C chord. Again play the C chord 4 times at the count of 1, 2, 3, 4. Try not to stop because your goal here is to switch between chords with perfect timing and it sounds the best as possible.

The D chord

The Next Acoustic guitar lessons chords is the D chord. The D chord pattern is shown below in figure 2. To play this, put your finger 1 on the 2nd fret of G string, finger 3 is on 3rd fret of B string and finger 3 on 2nd fret high e string. Play the chord with only 4 strings starting from open D string. The E and A string should not be played and it consider as dead string. In some cases it can’t be avoided to hit, just try to mute the string to stop from sounding. Again make sure that all the notes of the chords sounded.

The Em chords

I have written a four part acoustic guitar lessons which is easy to learn and easy to play chords. In this Part 1 of acoustic guitar lessons you are going to learn the basics of how to play the open chords easily.  These are the most basic hand position that you will first learn when starting to learn the guitar is the Em (E minor) chord. Figure 1 shown below was written this in tablature form. To play this, put your finger 2 on A string on the 2nd fret and your finger 3 on D string also in 2nd fret. Make sure that all the notes of the chords sounded. How to check this? Simple, pick each string individually from the 6th string to the 1st string. This will help you make sure that all of the notes of the chord are sounding.
